To qualify to use a Marine Radio at sea you should first attain a level of knowledge of the rules governing the use of a VHF, a competency in the operation of a marine band radio and then practice in voice procedures. All of this is the basis of the one day RYA VHF DSC course.
The school uses two pairs of Radios allowing candidates plenty of hands on experience.

Marine VHF radio is the best way of summoning help. You can contact the coastguard up to 50 miles offshore and talk to other yachts up to 15 to 20 miles on the open sea. If you use a marine VHF radio onboard your yacht you require, by law, a radio operator’s certificate. On completion you will be a competent radio operator and know the correct procedure for distress, urgency, and safety by means of marine VHF DSC radio.
